To further expand the company's technologically leading position in a wide variety of sectors, the Carl Zeiss Group continually invests in research and development: in fiscal 2011/12 Carl Zeiss used nine percent of revenue – the equivalent of EUR 390m (prior year: EUR 359m) – for this purpose.


The key to success at Carl Zeiss is committed, motivated and qualified employees and a corporate culture characterized by performance, responsibility and openness. Overall, around 10 percent of employees work in the various research and development areas of the Carl Zeiss Group.


Carl Zeiss holds a total of 5,157 patents and patent applications. In fiscal 2011/12, the company applied for 396 new patents (prior year: 326).
