The Göttingen area is characterized by the nearby Harz mountain range – its main distinguishing features being large forests and atmospheric heath and grassland areas. About 750 nature reserves, over 1,400 protected landscape areas and 13 large natural parks safeguard this natural habitat in Lower Saxony.

The Harz itself and the Weser Uplands are among the most popular and beautiful areas around Göttingen. There is still genuine "wilderness" here and almost untouched habitats for flora and fauna.
